Mindset Shifts for Success
Are you ready to overcome burnout? Turn your focus to right here. Right now.
Our culture is obsessed with what’s next.
What is our next big project?
Where do we need to go next?
What financial goals do I need to hit next?
When we’re always focused on the future and are never truly in the present moment, burnout becomes almost inevitable.
It’s so easy to be lured into this world of what’s coming next. We see flashes of this “perfect” life on social media and TV, not taking a step back to realize that there is more to the story. It makes us feel as if we need to be constantly dreaming and achieving the next thing to be successful. When you pay off debt, get the promotion, have kids… that’s when you’ll be happy. That is, until the burnout creeps in.
I’m not saying that there aren’t steps to take, work to do and a future worth having, but I AM saying that this all occurs in a beautifully orchestrated series of being present. After all, an acorn holds within it the entirety of a grand oak tree even before it is planted, but it must be patient and present in order to one day arrive at its greatest potential.
It’s Time for a Mindset Shift
A mindset shift is the first step in a list of mental health strategies that can help you overcome this toxic journey toward burnout.
Whether you’re suffering from…
- Job burnout
- Relationship burnout
- School burnout
… or just generalized burnout in the chaos of life, there are mental health strategies that you can implement to combat that anxious feeling.
First and foremost, it’s time for a mindset shift. When you catch yourself overthinking and grasping for “what’s next,” stop and think about how grateful you are to be where you are now. Even if you’re at a low point, simply take a deep breath and think about what you’re most thankful for now.
Remember: You are OK even when you don’t feel OK.
If you need help with this mindset shift, say this to yourself over and over, a million times or more:
“I am ok. I will be ok. Everything is ok.”
Shifting your mindset can feel daunting when you’re in deep burnout. It can feel overwhelming to be still and just breathe long slow and deep. However, it’s up to you to take responsibility for where you are now and ultimately change your outlook and lived experience.
Starting with a mindset shift will set you up for success as you implement other mental health strategies.

Putting it Into Practice
I have a couple of challenges for you as you practice being present and overcoming overwhelm.
Challenge #1: Ground Yourself
Catch yourself in the trap of comparison? It’s time for a reset.
Close your eyes.
Sit down with your feet flat against the ground.
Take 3 deep, slow breaths.
Continue breathing deeply and focus on your feet against the ground. How do they feel? Do you have socks on? Is the ground cold, or are you on soft carpet? Notice how what you focus on grows, it amplifies the sensation. Remember that throughout your day.
Be present. Once you’ve regulated your nervous system, take a moment to be grateful for where you’re at right now. While your eyes are closed, turn your mind toward gratitude. Who in your life are you most thankful for? Is your home keeping you safe and comfortable? Do you have satiating food? Focus on these things as you ground yourself.
Challenge #2: Journaling
When you find yourself anxiously obsessing over what’s next, start a journal entry. Journaling is a powerful way to unpack your thoughts and regain control over your mind. I recommend using a physical pen and paper for maximum impact.
Write down the thoughts and feelings that have intruded your mind, any fears and doubts. Write out anything and everything that is prohibiting you from being focused on the now. Give every reason for why you can’t change your mindset.
Now, tear that paper out and either find a safe place to burn it, or tear it to pieces. Rid yourself of it and refuse to read from this mental script any longer. Choose to not give that storyline your mental attention, and when it tries to creep back in, say “thank you, but I’m not interested in this boring worn-out story any longer.” Then move your mind to something helpful and productive.
Prioritize Mental Health
Using both or either of these practices will help prevent burnout and overwhelm. This is the foundation of mental health. To be. To Breathe. To be ok.
It is an ongoing journey, but one you’re capable of undertaking.
